Red Cross calls for healthy donors to maintain blood supply

(Oct. 19, 2018) — As influenza activity picks up, the American Red Cross is urging healthy donors of all blood types to give blood or platelets to ensure a strong blood supply for patients in need.

Blood and platelets can only be given by donors who are feeling well. One way to maintain health is to get a flu vaccine each fall. There is no waiting period to give blood or platelets after receiving a flu shot as long as the donor is symptom-free and fever-free.

Stay healthy this flu season and make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visitingRedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Donors of all blood types, especially type O, are needed this fall after hurricanes Michael and Florence forced the cancellation of about 200 blood drives, causing approximately 7,000 units of blood and platelets to go uncollected.

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

Volunteers needed
Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Volunteer transportation specialists play a very important role in ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need by transporting blood and blood products. For more information and to apply for a volunteer transportation specialist position, contact <insert local contact information> or visit rdcrss.org/driver.

FEMA Awards Pennsylvania over $60 million to Help First Responders in 2018

FEMA Awards Pennsylvania over $60 million to Help First Responders in 2018

PHILADELPHIA – Our firefighters, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responders, and State Fire Academies work hard every day to keep our communities safe. They rely on equipment, training, and resources to make sure that when there is an emergency, such as a building fire or medical emergency, they can respond quickly and efficiently. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recognizes the inestimable value of these first responders and has awarded fire companies, unaffiliated EMS, and the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania a total of$60,019,694 to help them in their service to our communities.
Through the Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program (AFG), FEMA has provided $35,461,062 for operational support, vehicle acquisition, and training opportunities. The AFG grants purchase life-saving equipment, such as turnout gear, hoses, self-contained breathing apparatus, and more that are critical to successfully responding to an emergency. “Every day, our first responders put themselves in harm’s way to help individuals and families, whether it’s responding to a medical emergency, fire, or accidents, they are there,” stated MaryAnn Tierney, FEMA Region III Regional Administrator. “These awards are an annual opportunity for FEMA to fund the critical equipment and needs of firefighters and EMS organizations so they can continue doing what they do best: helping their communities.”
In addition to AFG funding, Pennsylvania also received $24,395,456 in Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants to help retain, train, and invest in firefighters. These grants allow fire companies to continue to meet their staffing needs in order to protect their communities 24/7.
Lastly, Pennsylvania received $163,176 in Fire Prevention & Safety (FP&S) grants to help reduce the risk of fire in communities. These grants fund education, training, and resources, such as smoke alarms which fire companies often install in homes free of charge. Fire safety and education is a key part in reducing the risk of fire injury.
The AFG, SAFER, and FP&S grants are annual competitive grants which eligible fire companies, unaffiliated EMS, and state fire academies can apply for. The grants are subject to annual appropriations. The Fiscal Year 2018 AFG grants application period is now open until Friday, October 26, 2018 at 05:00pm EDT. Interested applicants can find tools and resources, including links to Program Webinars, at www.FEMA.gov/assistance-firefighters-grants-training-tools.
For more information on these grants, and how to apply, please visit www.FEMA.gov/welcome-assistance-firefighters-grant-program.
FEMA’s mission is helping people before, during, and after disasters. FEMA Region III’s jurisdiction includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. Dads’ Resource Center Introduces Educational Video Series on Protection from Abuse (PFA) Orders to Promote Understanding and Compliance
State College, PA–October 15, 2018–In keeping with National Domestic Awareness Month, Dads’ Resource Center introduces an educational video series (PFAINFO.net) that discusses Protection from Abuse (PFA) orders featuring interviews with a sheriff, district judge, attorney and community counselor.
In Centre County alone, there are approximately 250 temporary PFA orders granted each year, and 1 in 5 orders are found to have been violated. In support of National Domestic Awareness Month, and to provide additional support to those who are served with PFA orders, the Dads’ Resource Center has developed a series of informational videos to promote understanding and compliance.
The four informational videos, set in interview style, discuss the following:
·         Centre County Sheriff Bryan Sampsel talks about what to expect if you are served with a Protection From Abuse Order.
·         Magisterial District Judge Kelley Gillette-Walker discusses the process of being served with a Protection From Abuse order and how to prepare for, and what to expect at, an initial hearing before a judge.
·         Attorney Stephanie Cooper gives the perspective of PFAs from an attorney who practices criminal law and legal resources available to successfully follow a PFA.
·         Brian Coval from Crossroad Counseling, Inc. talks about the benefits of counseling and outlines community resources available to those affected by PFA orders.
” PFAs are important interventions that keep people safe,” states Jeff Steiner, executive director of Dads’ Resource Center. “It is in everyone’s best interest if we can provide more support for those who are under the order of a PFA and help them make good choices to ensure the safety of everyone who is involved.”
While the videos mainly address the viewpoint of those individuals being served a PFA order, the series offers valuable information for those seeking, or considering, protection orders.
“PFA orders affect both parties and the Sheriff’s Department is concerned with both,” says Sheriff Sampsel. “We need those being served to take the PFA very seriously and to follow it to the letter, because the courts show no leniency for order violation. We hope the videos will help them stay out of trouble, because once the PFA is violated, it often starts a snowball effect from there.”
“We also want those being protected by the PFA to remain safe at all times,” Sampsel continued. “We all need to do what we can to reduce domestic violence incidents.”
The Video Production Class at Bellefonte Area School District, directed by Mrs. Cipro, helped with the PFA series by shooting and producing the videos.
