Karol G, Prince Royce & Chiquis Rivera Test Positive for Coronavirus

The biggest Latinx music stars are reminding us that we’re still very much in the middle of a global pandemic. Recently, Karol G, Prince Royce, and Chiquis Rivera revealed they have tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Colombian superstar Karol G announced last night on Instagram live that she tested positive for COVID-19 a few weeks ago. “I hadn’t said anything because my parents are far away and I didn’t want them to worry about me,” Karol said. Sources with the L.A. Times revealed her diagnosis on July 12, which made her fans concerned. Karol is self-isolating from her fiancé, Puerto Rican rapper Anuel AA, who she says tested negative for COVID-19.

Last week Mexican-American singer Chiquis Rivera, the daughter of the late Jenni Rivera, revealed she and her husband Lorenzo Méndez tested positive for COVID-19. “We’re contagious so we have to be responsible and we are going to quarantine,” Rivera said on Instagram. After a brief separation, the couple reconciled in San Diego for July 4th weekend. That is where they believe they caught the virus.

That same week Dominican-American heartthrob Prince Royce revealed his COVID-19 diagnosis. “I went out to some restaurants because things opened up, and I thought, ‘Well, Florida hasn’t been so bad, and New York is the one with the problem,’” he said on Instagram. “I fell for that and I think many people can fall for that and will fall for that. Don’t be selfish and make the same mistakes that I probably did.”

On Sunday, Florida reported 15,299 new Coronavirus cases, breaking the record for most new cases reported in a state in one day. People should be wearing a mask in public, washing their hands, and social distancing to combat the COVID-19 virus that’s a real threat to everyone.

‘All Minorities Will Benefit’ – Ricky Martin on the Black Lives Matter Movement & More

‘All Minorities Will Benefit’ – Ricky Martin on the Black Lives Matter Movement & More

Global superstar Ricky Martin recently shared his support for the Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ+ movements during an interview with Proud Radio on Apple Music.

“We [thought] we knew about racism and when all this happened we realized we had no idea. I’ve been wearing the shoes of my fellow sisters, the Black community, the trans-black community that have always been struggling,” he said. “They’ve always been screaming, ‘We need help. They are killing us.’ And no one was listening. So you know what? This door has been opened where I believe all of the minorities will benefit from it because at the end of the day what will happen is that all the minorities will get together and will fight together for the same mission.”

The Puerto Rican singer also touched on being out and proud. He commends fellow Puerto Rican Latin trap artist Bad Bunny for being unabashedly gender fluid and said that was part of the reason why he wanted to work with him. “He’s a super powerful eye that we need to support,” Martin said, adding he has faith in the younger generation. “Because of their attitude, they are letting us know that, for example, my kids are not going to be dealing with half of the things that we dealt with.”

The 48-year-old father of four has been married to Syrian-Swedish painter Jwan Yosef for two years and this year marks a decade since he came out. He’s been a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ+ community since. In his memoir, “Me,” he shared that coming out allowed him to finally put his truth out into the world and find true happiness.

“I got to the place I was fighting as I was writing my book between saying, am I gay? Am I bisexual? Am I gay? Am I bisexual? And either [is] okay, just go within and do not lie to yourself. And then I said, ‘Rick, you are a very fortunate, homosexual, man. You are gay.’ And I wrote it and I pressed send, and then I cried like crazy. And I’ve been super happy ever since.”

Pantries Across the Diaspora Say Goodbye to Goya Products

Pantries Across the Diaspora Say Goodbye to Goya Products

Goya products have had a monopoly on Latino kitchens for decades, but those days might be coming to an end—and for good reason. On Thursday, Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue kicked off a mass Goya break-up everywhere by making a baffing appearance alongside Donald Trump and applauding his “leadership” at the White House.

Unanue spoke as part of an event designed around the “White House Hispanic Prosperity Initiative,” an executive order Trump signed to supposedly “improve Hispanic Americans’ access to educational and economic opportunities.” Unanue piled on the praise for Trump while announcing that Goya will be donating 1 million cans of chickpeas and 1 million pounds of food to food banks.

“We are all truly blessed… to have a leader like President Trump who is a builder,” Unanue said during his remarks. “We have an incredible builder, and we pray. We pray for our leadership, our president.”

His comments sparked the #Goyaway hashtag and a boycott on social media. Twitter users blasted Unanue for supporting a man who has stoked racism against the community that Goya benefits from most. People also called out the utter hypocrisy of Unanue standing by Trump and a “Hispanic Prosperity Initiative” event when Trump has referred to Latinos as criminals and rapists, separated thousands of families at the border, put children in cages, campaigned on a Mexico-U.S. border wall, characterized immigration as an “invasion” and tried to dismantle DACA.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Julián Castro were some of the most prominent voices that spoke up against the company. AOC cracked a joke about googling “how to make your own Adobo,” while Castro asked Americans to “think twice” before stocking up on Goya.

“[Goya] has been a staple of so many Latino households for generations,” Castro wrote. “Now their CEO, Bob Unanue, is praising a president who villainizes and maliciously attacks Latinos for political gain. Americans should think twice before buying their products.”

Meanwhile, Latino USA host Maria Hinojosa suggested people turn to alternative brands and local products. “Support smaller local versions & how abt going to Latino neighborhoods, supporting Bodegas, small groceries in the barrio?”
